Selena Gomez Responds to Social Media Body Shaming

From the launch of her iconic beauty brand to her tell-all documentary, Selena Gomez has taken the internet by storm in recent months. In addition to her incredible music, acting and now entrepreneurial endeavors, the star has also always kept empowering others to be their true, authentic selves at the top of her to-do list. Despite her positive and loving attitude, the star has been facing some unnecessary and unkind comments on social media regarding her body. This week, Gomez took to TikTok live to address the body-shaming individuals and explain the impact that her Lupus medication has had on her weight.

Gomez has always been open about her struggles with the autoimmune illness, Lupus, and in her recent TikTok live, the actress explained that her changing body has a lot to do with the medication she takes to manage her symptoms. “When I’m taking it, I tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally. When I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight,” she explains. Gomez went on to make clear that the negative comments being made about her physical appearance don’t weigh heavily on her, as her main priority is her health; “Yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s**t, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.”

True to her empowering self, Gomez went on to address her followers and encourage them to not worry about what other people have to say about them, since no body ever really knows one’s full story. “I just want you to know that you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful,” she says lovingly. The star concluded by explaining that “I’m not a model, I never will be,” and that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, further emphasizing her steadfast belief in self-love; one we all could take note from.
