The Products Meghan Trainor Loves for Her “Thin, Thin Hair” — Interview

Allure: It sounds like you have really delicate hair. What are your biggest hair concerns?

I went to a doctor a couple of years ago and asked, “Why won’t my hair grow? I don’t ever cut it.” That was after I went from red to blonde, and I had so much breakage and damage. My hair was to my chin.

I learned that my follicles were covered in guck every day from products and styling and that I’m not a girly that can go five to seven days without washing my hair, which is what I was doing because that’s what all these girls in LA do. I need to scrub my scalp and take care of it. And so I’ve been looking for a good shampoo and conditioner to help find the underlying causes of why my hair is not growing.

I also used to think, “I need extensions; I need to have super long hair.” But I finally let go of that, and my hair grew so significantly when I stopped wearing extensions. Now I’m confident going to Target with my natural hair down because I let it live and grow.

Allure: Has pregnancy affected your hair at all?

Trainor: I’ve had friends that have brushed their hair and chunks come out after pregnancy. I don’t know if it’s my amazing prenatal vitamins, but my hair grows so much when I’m pregnant that people don’t believe it. They’ll assume I put my extensions back in. I’m like, “Nope, this is all me baby.”

After my first pregnancy, I didn’t have chunks come out, but I would have shorter hairs sticking up at the top of my head. I couldn’t tell if it was breakage or new hair growing. I was upset either way because it looked so weird. So being pregnant right now and being on my prenatals is so nice.

Allure: So the secret to hair growth might be pregnancy?

Trainor: Yeah, it’s pregnancy.

Allure: What about your skin?

Trainor: I have perioral dermatitis [a type of facial rash] while I’m pregnant because my hormones are all over the place. It’s not fun. There are red bumps all over my chin and around my mouth. They’re not poppable pimples or anything, and they’re not risen. They’re just red patches. So when I don’t have makeup on, people are like, “Oh, are you OK?”
