Twinning is winning, says Sydney Sweeney. The Euphoria star just made a very compelling case for matching your eye shadow to your dress.
Sweeney let her ice blue Miu Miu dress be the inspiration for her makeup for a party in Cannes, replicating the baby blue shade almost exactly via her eye shadow. Makeup artist Melissa Hernandez applied a matte pastel blue shadow all over her lid and up to the brow, then added a deep black liquid liner to ground the airy color and give it a mod ’60s vibe to match the retro wiggle dress. Pink blush and a rich rose pink lip were the perfect finishing touch for this sweet look.
Matching your eye shadow to your outfit has cycled in popularity throughout the years; when you think about such matchy-matchy makeup moments, you probably think of the pale blue colors and bright purple shadows of the ’80s and the icy metallic tones popular in the Y2K era. The trend is definitely primed for a comeback, though, and Sweeney seems to be all in; while the star typically hasn’t worn a ton of eye shadow in the past, she recently [paired a silver breastplate gown with liquid silver shadow and a “cracked mirror” manicure. In late 2022, we noticed many SAG Awards attendees giving it a spin, including Lady Gaga and Sandra Oh. Rihanna has also given the matchy-matchy trend her extremely coveted stamp of approval, rocking monochromatic cobalt blue and crimson red looks in the past.
Sweeney’s Miu Miu moment was definitely vintage-inspired from head to toe, including her messy, undone updo by stylist Glen Oropeza. Sweeney’s honey blonde hair was piled atop her head in tousled curls, and long curtain bangs framed the pastel blue shadow. Sweeney may be feeling blue, but it’s in the very, very best way.
