The annual Roots Picnic music festival, which ran from June 2 to June 4, featured performances from tons of stars, including Eve, Usher, and even the Fugees. The hip-hop group’s frontwoman Ms. Lauryn Hill looked divine on stage with a kinky abstract, sculptural hairstyle that defied gravity.
On June 3, Hill performed in an all-black gown with a massive green cape and her angular hair. Parts of her kinky hair stuck straight up and were shaped (or potentially cut) into a wide, hi-top fade with a section of hair removed from one side of the flat top. The top of her hair was very geometric and structured, while the bottom hung loose and looked like half of a voluminous Afro.
The volume and height of this hair are quite impressive. It almost looks like it’s combining two very different but popular styles into one, an Afro and hi-top fade, which was trendy in the ‘80s and ’90s. I would love to know the inspiration for this style and how it was done. Maybe she wanted to invoke some nostalgia with her look?
