Kyle Richards On the Hair and Skin-Care That Keep Her Looking Young

This weekend, Bravo fans watched with bated breath as they streamed live videos of Bravocon and scrolled through Instagram to see the beloved Bravolebrities hanging out in Las Vegas. We were lucky enough to attend Bravocon, where we caught up with some of our favorite stars.

Before all the fun of the weekend kicked off, we got to chat with one of the most iconic Real Housewives ever to do it, Kyle Richards. One of Kyle’s many coveted assets is her gorgeous hair, so it was no surprise she teamed up with Nexxus during Bravocon to serve shiny, full-volume hair looks. Over dinner and an interview, we got to learn more about the one and only Kyle.

Can we talk about that split on Kelly Clarkson? Have you always been flexible? Do you do anything to maintain it? What’s your workout routine like?

“I’m always asked, ‘Is there something people don’t know about you?’ I have hypermobility syndrome, where I’m double-jointed, so I can just flop down like that. I’m very flexible, abnormally so. They actually said it’s like a deformity, but I’m like, ‘It’s okay. I’ll take it. It’s fine.’ I do work out every day, and I do stretch, but I’m not always doing the splits—unless I’m in yoga. Yoga is something I like to throw in the mix, but I really like running and spinning.”

Are there any lasers, facials, body treatments or other in-office treatments you’ve loved lately to get you camera ready?

“I think the no-downtime lasers are the way to go. I’m always accused of doing so many things to my face that I haven’t done, and I read these comments, and it’s so extremely frustrating. I will say ‘thanks’ to my mom because of her, I had good skin already. But with no-downtime lasers, I feel like people don’t realize how unbelievable they are. They tighten your skin, they get rid of fine lines, sunspots, brown spots, so I’m really diligent about that, and I think that’s one of my favorite things to do.”

You get the chance to try so many products. What are you loving right now?

“I had never had damaged hair before, and my hair was great, so I didn’t have to think about it—then I started styling it a lot more with the show. Recently, I highlighted my hair, and for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m starting to have to think about that.’ I was excited to partner with Nexxus because I found their products to be unbelievable for repairing your hair and protecting your hair. They just made it shinier and thicker because I had lost some volume too—I don’t know if that’s from age or stress or whatever it may be—so I love that about the products.

When I’m styling my hair for something like tonight, I like a classic 90s blowout or Victoria’s Secret model kind of hair, so I use the Nexxus Unbreakable Care Root Lift Thickening Spray ($18). Before I wouldn’t necessarily have needed it as much, so now it just kind of helps give me that whole sexy look.

I’m really loving this SkinMedica Retinol ($80) product recently because I had some sunspots, and I had gotten them zapped off but wasn’t seeing that big of a difference. We went to Europe during the summer for our trip, and I was using that every day with something else, and I came back, even though I was in the sun every day, with fewer spots than I had going there. I was like, ‘Wow, that is a first,’ so I really am a big fan of that product.

I was using the .5 percent one, so then, I was like, ‘Oh, well, that worked. Let me go to the one percent,’ and then my face started peeling, but I was like, ‘This is amazing if you’re not on camera.’ Then they have a Pigment Correcting Serum ($160) that I was using little dots of because the bottle I had was tiny, but then they must have sent a big bottle, so I put it all over my face, and I was like, ‘I think I have a fever. I’m on fire.’ The next day, my skin started peeling off, and thank God it wasn’t on camera, and I was snowed in there, but I was like, ‘This is actually amazing. It works.’”

What are some beauty secrets or tricks you’ve learned from your mom?

“We did everything ourselves. My mom wasn’t someone who went to the salon like all the women would do, so I will color my hair myself at home, I’ve done my nails myself—she raised me like that. So I’m like that, and my daughters are not like that.

Also teaching me to always take care of my hair and my skin equally. My mom was always like, ‘You have the best hair. You have to take care of that. That’s part of your trademark.’ And so I was always really thinking about trying not to damage my hair and using the best products on my hair so that it always looks healthy and shiny because I think that makes you look younger. Our hair looking young is a big part of looking young too.”

What has surprised you most about being in your 50s?

“That I feel so good. Even when you say that, I’m like, ‘Who are you talking about? Me, oh, that’s right.’ I don’t feel like that at all. I had so many insecurities around my body growing up. My sisters are super skinny and blonde, and I was curvy and brunette, and I had a lot of body image issues. I feel like I finally figured it all out. It took me all these years, but I feel really good, and I feel really confident. I’ve learned what works for me style-wise and product-wise, and what works on my body, and so I feel really good.”

What is your favorite thing about being part of the Real Housewives franchise?

“The relationships I have with the people that make the show—the crew, my producers—I’m very close with them. They know everything about my life. And catching memorable moments with my children, like learning how to drive and going off to college, or Portia’s second birthday that we can see, and she’s in her second year of high school now. Capturing those memories is definitely one of the best parts.”
