Taylor Swift has been making headlines lately, even more than usual, which we didn’t realize was possible. Between the release of “1989 Taylor’s Version” and the thrill of watching her lean into being a football fan, it’s hard to turn without bumping into someone who wants to talk about Swift. The star loves setting a trend, and when we saw her faux bob paired with a powder blue gown and red lip at her Era Tour movie premiere, we knew there would be a surge in searches on how to get the look. Many celebrities are chopping their hair into bobs, but if you don’t want that level of commitment, here’s how to pull a Swift and have a bob for a day.
How to do faux bob hair
“To achieve a faux bob with long hair, I would suggest putting the hair into a loose ponytail about an inch longer than how you want the bob to sit. Then take the ponytail and fold under and pin the hair until it feels secure,” celebrity hairstylist Angela Stevens tells us. “After it’s secure, you want to shape the faux bob to ensure it’s even on both sides and pin underneath as needed to create balance.” Then Stevens recommends pulling out a few wisp pieces around the face, especially those that are close to the length of the bob. “Spray with hairspray, and you’re done. Short hair without the commitment!”
Celebrity hairstylist Sunnie Brooke shared a video with us in which she uses a similar technique, but first, she divides the hair into two sections, braiding the bottom half and wrapping it into a bun secured with bobby pins. Then, she releases the top half of the hair and pulls it into two ponytails with clear elastics. She pins the bottom of the tails under so the bob looks seamless.
Adding volume to the faux bob
If you have curly or wavy hair to create extra volume, Sunnie Brooke recommends pinching and pulling the top sections of the hair while holding the end of the tail in place. For those with straight hair, she suggests adding a few waves with a hot tool beforehand.
Adding a bang to the faux bob
If you’re set on achieving a similar look to Swift’s, but you don’t have bangs, you’ll need to get craft. Celebrity hairstylist Paul Labrecque says the star “went for a Hollywood glamour look with a retro 30s wave style with fringe.” To easily replicate the look, he recommends adding a bang extension.
