Tracee Ellis Ross did a little time traveling at the Emmy Awards on January 15, both on the red carpet and onstage. While she transformed herself into Lucille Ball for an ode to I Love Lucy opposite Natasha Lyonne during the ceremony, complete with a bright red Lucy wig, it was her flippy pre-show ponytail that sent us right back to the ’60s.
Before dressing up like Ball in the infamous chocolate factory sequence, Ross hit the red carpet in a high, perky pony paired with a white gown and glam red lip. (On Instagram, Ross referred to it as an “Esmeralda” pony, saying you “gotta name the hairz.”) Hairstylist E Williams used Ross’s line Pattern Beauty on the star, pulling her hair tightly back from her face for a slicked-back base, then creating a full, bouncy-yet-structural high ponytail right at the crown of her head. The ends of the pony were dramatically flipped out for a vintage vibe, a fun contrast against her super-modern dress.
